A Mayan Adventure

Arriba!

Good day friends! The hubby and I just landed back from our honeymoon in the ever gorgeous Rivera Maya. We were lucky enough to experience many fantastic excursions and create new memories that will last a lifetime! We loved our jungle adventures so much that I want to share a piece of them with you! If you are ever looking for something fun to do while in the Riviera Maya here are a few of my suggestions!

Explore the Ruins of Coba

The first stop during our travels? The ruins of Coba! This wasn't any plain-Jane Coba excursion though, this was the amped up extreme version! Before arriving at the ruins travelers visit a small village where they are able dabble in a set of adrenaline junky themed activities. Highlights of said activities include zip lining, rappelling into a cenote, hiking through the jungle and canoeing. However, before one has the chance to survive any of these thrilling events you must first survive the car ride there.... I'm not sure if I just drive like a granny or if this experience is universal but all of the drivers in Mexico have a need for speed! On the way to our destination we saw two semi trucks flipped on the side of the road. This was  less than comforting considering we were cruising at 70 MPH down a super narrow back-road somewhere in BFE Mexico. NOTHING awaiting us at the village seemed quite as frightening as another hour spent flying down that road.

Anyways, moving on. After stopping at the village and getting pumped up on adrenaline it's time to depart for the main attraction, Coba! Adventurers are given about 2 hours to explore the land which has many small ruins and the classic Mayan ball court and of course the glorious Coba. Coba is the highest pyramid in Mexico and visitors can still make the daring climb to the top unlike other pyramids in the area. As long as you don't look down the climb up isn't too bad! Of course the stairs are tiny and steep, I used the crawling on all 4's technique and it worked smashingly.

The climb is worth the view! The treetops become tiny and look like heads of broccoli, the sun is shining bright and if you're lucky you'll catch a refreshing cool breeze!

Float in a Freshwater Canal at Sian Ka'an

Our next stop, the Bio-reserve of Sian Ka'an! This is a newer excursion and as our guide so kindly put it, "the excursion for children and old people". Now hold on a tick before you write this one off and let me elaborate a little more.... It is the excursion of children and old people because of how relaxing it is! You literally get to see some smaller ruins, take a nice hike, float through a canal and get a bomb-a$$ lunch on the beach. It sounds pretty good now doesn't it! Another bonus, you get to float down the canal wearing your life jacket as a diaper! Diaper technique FTW! I should also add that the lunch we were provided on the day trip was simply the best food I've eaten during an excursion. They take you to a beach-side restaurant that is 100% photo worthy. You are given 2 free drinks to sip on while taking in the sights and waiting for your freshly made sizzling fajitas to arrive!

Party it up at Xochimilco

When you think of Mexico what is one of the first things to come to your mind? Is it tequila? Perhaps mariachi music? Oh wait, how about tacos!? What if I told you there was a place you could get all of that and more? Well my friends, you're in luck because Xochimilco is the bees knees. I'm a sucker for the outdoors and adventure but this tour may have been my favorite. Guests float through canals in decorated gondolas as the stars in the night sky twinkle above them. This tour includes UNLIMITED drinks (tequila, beer, rum....), appitizers, a VERY generous meal and 9 desserts! That's right, count em', 9! Drunk you will be pleased to know that your evening will be jam packed with music and dancing! The boat makes several stops at different mariachi bands throughout the voyage. Perhaps the most relieving stop will be your favorite, AKA intermission. Here the boat stops along shore where passengers can climb out to take a much needed pee break after all of that boozing. All in all Xochimilco is super cute, super fun and over the top awesome!

Visit the Mayan Underworld, AKA Rio Secreto

Sadly the adventure must wind down at some point. No worries though, Rio Secreto is the perfect place to end your trip with a bang! Here you will have the chance to explore an underground river system. Walking through this ever winding cavern fills one with senses of awe and intrigue. Spelunkers are given a wet suit, like jacket and helmet before entering. Not only will you be walking through a majestic underground utopia, you will also have the chance to float in it! As luck would have it the water in this cavern is at the perfect depth for visitors of all ages to enjoy. No worries if swimming isn't your favorite activity, the gear you are provided with will keep you perfectly safe and for the most part fairly warm. I say fairly warm because the water is no doubt "refreshing" as they like to say. If swimming isn't your strong suit don't evade this tour just yet! Most of the time the water will only go up to your thighs at most, you only have to float for maybe 10 minutes and if you are around my height of 5'7 you should be able to touch the ground most of the time. Rio Secreto is a truly unique experience that might not be around forever seeing as the excursion is at the mercy of mother nature!

There you have it folks! Hopefully my suggestions can help aid you when trying to choose the perfect excursion during your visit to Mexico and the Rivera Maya!

Keep Exploring!
