Lucky in Kentucky
Ah yes, derby city.
Louisville, the city of fried chicken, bourbon and lovely southern drawls. Just south of the Ohio river this Kentucky city offers beautiful views and oodles of fun alike. There's just something about river towns that fills my heart with glee. Louisville is no different!
The Big Four Pedestrian Bridge-
The big four is impressive! Spanning from the border of Kentucky, across the Ohio river to the Indiana shoreline this bridge is a must see. You can walk, bike or skate your way to the other side (scratch that, I just looked at their website and skateboarding is prohibited... if you try it you didn't get the idea from me...). Unfortunately I was unable to see them for myself but, the Big Four is famous for it's special lighting system that wraps around the bridge. At night it is illuminated in a variety of snazzy colors.

Main Street:
If you like quirky art, old architecture and museums this is the street for you. Home to the Louisville Slugger Museum, a giant gold replica of the statue of David and the Science Center your sure to find ways to entertain yourself. The Muhammad Ali center is also in walking distance of main street. If you venture past all the action you can see some fun street art too. My favorites were the giant vampire bat and this lovely cardinal mural.
Waverly Hills:
I know, I know, I've been talking Waverly Hills up in my last couple posts like it's nobodies business. So I will leave you with this; Waverly Hills is one of the most haunted places in America, If you are even remotely interested in the paranormal and find yourself in the Louisville area I 100% recommend you make a visit.
Evan William's Bourbon Experience:
What is a visit to Kentucky without a sip of their liquid currency. That's right, I'm talking about Bourbon! The Evan William's Bourbon Experience is a fun and historical tour. You'll walk out with some Kentucky history up your sleeves and a basic understanding of the Bourbon distilling process. This tour is extremely popular so be sure to order your tickets in advance if you have your heart set on checking it out. If you miss the boat and can't book a tour with Evan William's have no fear! There are a handful of other distilleries near by such as Jim Beam, Pearless Distilling and Angel's Envy.
Cave Hill Cemetery:
This might come as an odd recommendation but Cave Hill Cemetery is a sight to be seen! It is also the final resting place of some Kentucky notables such as Colonel Sanders (that's right as in KFC) and Muhammad Ali. Filled with beautifully intricate headstones, obelisks and mausoleums there's something captivating about this large burial ground. There's also an abundance of veteran graves here complete with flags showing which war they fought in, the whole experience is v. patriotic.
Churchhill Downs:
A Louisville classic, when in Kentucky you've gotta see some horse racing. There happened to be a random race day going on during our visit and we snagged some general admission tickets for $3 a pop. The races were unlike anything I've ever seen before and the experience was interesting. We were a bit out of place in our shorts and t-shirts next to all the fancy people in their floppy hats and polo shirts.
Louisville Mega Cavern:
The Mega Cavern is a newer attraction in the Louisville area. The Mega Cavern has it all from ziplining to mountain biking. We settled for something a little more low-key and took the tram-tour. The Mega Cavern is a man-made cavern with a very interesting history. Once used as a government bunker in case of atomic warfare the cavern now serves as a tourist attraction and business bureau. Yep, you read that right, apparently companies will pay good money to have their office headquatered hundreds of miles underground... sounds a bit fishy if you ask me... it's a conspiracy!
Bardstown Road:
If you're looking for nightlife or some good nomz you must hit up Bardstown Road. We found ourselves perusing this trendy hot-spot every night of our trip. Bardstown Road is a good place to go for local flavor and fun night life. A few of our favorite finds were The Holy Grale, Molly Malone's the Dragon King's Daughter and the Homemade Pie and Ice Cream Kitchen (Yummmmm).
Louisville is a great destination for fun, food and bourbon. I look forward to returning in the future.
Until then, keep it real Kentucky.
