My Wellness Secrets

It wasn't until I began giving a friend oodles of self-care and wellness tips that I realized I have a lot of knowledge to share. My mental health journey has been in full swing for a few years now and I've tried a lot of different things to see what works best for me. Wellness is different for everyone, but here are a few things I found work especially well for me.

Meditation
The Headspace meditation app has been a literal godsend in my life. Forming a daily meditation practice continues to prove to be difficult, however, when I take the time to commit I can truly feel meditation change my life. Since starting my Headspace journey a little less than a year ago I've learned how to observe my thoughts for what they are and how to live in the moment. I've felt significantly less anxious and I've conquered mental roadblocks I never thought possible.

Fitness
Nothing banishes a bad mood like a killer workout. I signed up for a P90X class with my city's park and recs department a while back and it's easily one of the best parts of my week. No matter how much I dread making the trek to class after a long day I'm always happy that I did and I'm always fascinated by my body's ability to do the seemingly impossible. In addition to P90X, walking is another source of joy in my life. As simple as it seems, a little fresh air can definitely do the body some good.

Introspection
It's easy to try to run away from our deepest and darkest thoughts but that usually doesn't help solve our problems. Instead, I've found digging deeper and really exploring my thoughts to be beneficial. My favorite ways to do this are through tarot and journaling. Despite popular belief and movie depictions, tarot cards are not evil and they cannot predict your future (sorry to burst your bubble). However, tarot cards are an amazing self-help tool that can help you explore a situation from a new perspective. Simply pull a card, read the definition and see how it can be applied to your life. After pulling a card I like to reflect with a quick journal entry in addition to notes about my day and anything else worth mentioning.

Treat Yo' Self
Being a Leo, I'm big into the treat yo' self mentality. Whether it be decadent desserts, indulging in a Netflix binge or buying that cute top from Target, sometimes you gotta splurge a little. Well, if you've explored any of my past posts my most recent obsession is no secret, that's right ladies and gentlemen, I'm talking about Lush Handmade Cosmetics. Beauty and skin care have always had a special place in my heart and Lush's products are a fantastic treat when I'm looking for a way to indulge. I'm not saying a lavender-scented shower gel and a 10-minute face mask will solve all of life's problems but they certainly won't hurt either.

Vitamins
Disclaimer: I'm not 100% sure if I feel better because of my vitamins or if it's the placebo effect, but I really think these things work! After some contemplation, I gave in and decided to give Ritual Vitamins a whirl and I'm pleasantly surprised with the result. My biggest concerns were Vitamin D because I live in Wisconsin and Omega-3. I was also looking for a good multivitamin for overall health. Since taking Ritual I've felt more energized and less susceptible to seasonal depression disorder, the pills are easy to take and get delivered to my door on a monthly basis. It's only been two months, but I'm excited to see if I experience any further changes.

Nomz
I don't necessarily consider myself a star-chef or anything of the like, but I do like to cook a fresh meal every now and again. My husband and I are big on crockpot meals and owning a rice cooker has proven to be a game changer in the kitchen. Because of all our nifty kitchen gadgets, dinner is usually pretty easy, my real meal prep nemesis is lunches. At this point I'll ask a simple question, does anyone really like packing their lunch? It's time-consuming, tedious and dreadfully repetitive. Luckily, I've discovered the magic of zoodles and let me tell you friends, zoodles are spectacular. So where am I going with this rant? Fresh food is a big mood booster, not to mention you'll feel better if you aren't slowed down by fast foods and processed junk. Zoodles are a great solution because you can still experiment with pasta dishes and get your serving of veggies in one go.
