Weary Road
The Legend of
Wisconsin’s Weary Road
The 3rd
time's the charm, or at least that’s what they say about Wisconsin’s Weary Rd.
Those in search of this mysterious man will find themselves traveling down a
long dark road in Evansville Wisconsin lined with large villainous trees. Rumor
has it that back in the day Old Man Weary was a local resident. Weary loved entertaining children and because of this he was accused of pedophilia. Neighbors began to whisper, claiming that Weary lured children
to his property. Eventually, the parents had enough and decided to put an end
to Weary once and for all. Late one night they set fire to his home tragically
killing Old Man Weary and some of the local children. To make matters worse, it
was later determined that Weary was innocent and there was no truth behind the
accusations directed toward him.
The home Weary
resided in was reduced to rubble and can no longer be seen today. However, this fiery fate was not the end of Old Man Weary. In fact,
Weary seems to be causing more trouble from beyond the grave than he did while he was alive. According to legend if you visit secluded Weary Rd three times,
Old Man Weary himself will appear in your rearview mirror getting closer and
closer to your car each time you look back. If you travel far enough down the
road you will come to a bridge that crosses a small creek. It is said that when you
park your car on the bridge and turn off your headlights the vehicle will not
restart upon trying to turn the key. Supposedly, this tale does not sit well
with the residents of Evansville. Whenever the subject is brought up locals are
quick to change the topic.
Weary isn't alone, there have been many reports of other
mysterious activity taking place at this location. A few of these strange
sightings include phantom trains, cars and motorcycles, glowing lights and creatures in the trees. Some who visit the road claim they were scratched on
their arms and legs. Jake Buege, a Wisconsin native and urban legend fan recalls
the following from his travels to Weary Rd., “When you have the chance to be alone out on the road, which is rare
because there always seems to be someone else there, it's got an ominous feel.
And it's very quiet.”
As a paranormal
enthusiast myself I have taken a visit or two out to Weary Road throughout the
years. Sadly, Old Man Weary has yet to grace me with his presence. However,
I’ve only stopped by twice and Old Man Weary likes to play hard to get. Perhaps
on my next jaunt the number of patrons in my backseat will increase by one.
What I can say about Weary Road is there is definitely something eerie going on
there. The trees lining the road are tall, thick and ghoulish as they slowly engulf you as you travel further down the road. Silence fills the air as you're surrounded by only cornfields and your own paranoid thoughts.
The captivating
question remains; does Old Man Weary still wander Weary Rd? Three times does the
trick, go see for yourself…if you dare!
